Take Flight competition helps promote business innovation

Rohan Thomas always had a dream of starting his own business.

But when he set up his current company more than 10 years ago, little did he know that he would end up pursuing his passion full-time and be preparing to open a second store in Canberra a decade later.

“I have always loved designing clothes and set up a small clothing brand called A4 from my home in 2009,” Mr Thomas said.

“Soon after the company started, other businesses started approaching me with a request to print for them and the brand soon evolved into ROJO Customs, which is a creative studio and print shop.”

When Mr Thomas was starting his new business, he heard about the Take Flight competition run by Danielle Cleary Events and decided to participate in it. The competition was started by the company as a way to celebrate the business’ birthday each year and help promote innovation and ‘launch’ a small business.

“I decided to participate in the competition as it looked like a perfect opportunity to promote my business in the local community,” Mr Thomas said.

“I made lots of business connections which helped boost my business. Winning the competition, meeting other business owners and other people through the event has been very helpful.”

Mr Thomas is encouraging other businesses to participate in the competition, which would help them network and be more visible in the community through social media promotions.

“Even if you don’t end up winning the competition, you are still a winner because it gives your business exposure in the community,” he said.

Danielle Cleary, founder and owner of Danielle Cleary Events, said the Take Flight competition had evolved since it started. The winner now receives a spot at the Canberra Fair.

“We’re excited to revamp our original Danielle Cleary Events Take Flight competition in support of small business, now with a Canberra Fair twist,” she said.

“We are celebrating new business through innovation, collaboration and community connectedness. Canberra Fair and Partners invite new business, emerging talent and businesses offering a new product or service to win a premier exhibit at our upcoming Summer Fair in February 2021.

“This fun, fully styled exhibition stand is a great opportunity to showcase your business and is free for our chosen winning business.

“New businesses, emerging talent and existing services offering a new product or service can sign up for the competition, nominating themselves through the online platform. The winner is selected on the basis of the maximum number of votes received by a business at the end of the competition.”

Entries close on January 9, 2021, and the top 10 entrants will be introduced via social media for people to vote for from January 15-24.
