For those who want to get a business off the ground, commercialise an idea, or explore new markets – even those overseas – it can be complex to know what to do. But support and funding options are out there, you just need to know where to go.

To help new and established businesses in the ACT, the Lighthouse Business Innovation Centre in collaboration with the new WOTSO WorkSpace in Woden is providing a free information session on Wednesday to showcase some of the initiatives available to Canberra’s innovators and entrepreneurs.

Woden’s new WOTSO WorkSpace shows why communal workplaces are growing in popularity worldwide.

“The ACT is a great place to start a business or launch a for-purpose organisation,” Lighthouse CEO Anna Pino said.

“However, it’s not always easy to find information about the different programs available, especially when you are just starting out.”

According to Ms Pino, there is an interesting mix of niche and sector-specific initiatives mixed in with government-funded programs that might provide a boost for a small business, social enterprise, not-for-profit, or someone with an innovative idea.

She said funding cuts to the not-for-profit sector over the last couple of years have forced these organisations to be more innovative.

“We have certainly seen some very clever commercial offerings developed by the not-for-profit sector which are then used to fund their other activities.”

Wednesday’s information session will look at the different types of funding options available, including debt funding, equity funding, grant programs and sponsorships.

It will also cover services and programs that provide business support, such as government programs, business advisers, networking and peer support.

The workshop will be held in the new WOTSO WorkSpace in Woden, providing an opportunity to network with peers and showcase the new way of working in communal work places.

According to Karina Bock from WOTSO WorkSpace, modern businesses, employers and employees have evolved with each demanding more flexibility and community, and a better sense of balance.

“Co-working spaces like ours here at WOTSO work to create that everyday for our members, whether they are a large corporate or a small business operator. We have created environments for people to grow their businesses in a way that works well for them,” Ms Bock said.
