When it comes to residential, commercial and business property transactions, up-and-coming lawyer Rohail Azhar is getting plenty of runs on the board.
Born in Canberra, Rohail spent his early childhood with his grandparents in Pakistan before returning to Australia where he finished his schooling and attended the University of Canberra, graduating with a Bachelor of Politics and International Relations and a Bachelor of Laws in 2018.
The self-confessed cricket tragic is the newest member of the property law team at Snedden Hall & Gallop and, when he’s not in the office, he loves nothing more than following Arsenal FC or catching a cricket match, splitting his loyalty between the Aussies and the Shaheens, a sporting and social organisation comprising players of Pakistani origin living around the world.
The young lawyer has travelled the globe gaining experience in his field, studying in the Netherlands and the US.
Rohail has volunteered as a paralegal with Legal Aid ACT and completed an internship with the Australian Civil-Military Centre.
He is also a former member of the Australian Red Cross International Humanitarian Law action group.
Rohail was admitted as a solicitor in the ACT Supreme Court in August 2019, and joined the Snedden Hall & Gallop team in March 2021.
He says property transactions can be complex, but he has enjoyed getting his teeth into a variety of them.
“I work with a diverse range of property matters and many of my clients have complex financial arrangements,” he says.
“Working in property law, where retirement contracts, estates or trusts are involved, is very interesting.”
Rohail says the hot Canberra property market is having a ripple effect through the industry, with everyone from real estate agents to solicitors putting in the hard yards.
“It’s a seller’s market and, industry wide, I think everyone is experiencing the urgency,” he says.
Rohail says some property buyers can rush into a purchase without reviewing contracts or understanding their responsibilities.
“The legal side of things can be an afterthought for some people,” he says. “It can be tedious, but it’s important to take the process seriously.”
He says some eager buyers will go to an auction without having done their due diligence, or without having finance approved – a move that could see them in financial trouble or losing their dream home.
“People looking to buy should spend the time and get legal advice, or speak to a broker before the auction because it can save time and hassles down the track,” says Rohail.
