Registrations now open for green bins in Weston Creek and Kambah

MEEGAN FITZHARRIS MLA
Minister for Health
Minister for Transport and City Services
Minister for Higher Education, Training and Research
Member for Yerrabi
19 December 2016

The next stage of the registration process for residents in Weston Creek and Kambah to sign up for the ACT Government’s green bin pilot program is now open.

“Residents living in the suburbs of Chapman, Duffy, Fisher, Holder, Rivett, Stirling, Waramanga, Weston and Kambah can now opt in to be part of the green bin pilot program,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“Residents who register will receive a 240 litre green waste bin in March 2017 for all their garden vegetation waste. Once the initial delivery of bins is completed, collections are scheduled to start in April 2017. A one-off registration fee of $50 will be required at the time of registering, unless you are a concession card holder.

“Prior to this registration period, the ACT Government sought expressions of interest from local residents to gauge the number of residents willing to participate in the pilot. Based on the feedback we have received from residents so far, there is a lot of excitement and interest in the community to see green waste bins on our streets.

“Since May 2016 more than 6,000 residents expressed an interest in receiving a green waste bin in Weston Creek and Kambah, which is fantastic. We now urge those residents to register their details so they can receive their bin.

“It really goes to show this is something ACT residents want, and the ACT Government is committed to delivering it so Canberra can continue to be the beautiful garden city that it is.

“Weston Creek and Kambah were chosen first to give the ACT Government a good sample size of residents in an established region of Canberra. They are mature suburbs with established gardens and are broadly representative of the housing profile of the city.

“We’re making sure we get it right by conducting a phased roll-out; similar to the recycling bin roll-out. Other regions across Canberra will follow, and Tuggeranong and Belconnen will be the next regions to be able to register. We will keep the community updated about progress with the program.”
