Canberra-based healthcare company Aspen Medical is adding to its growing global primary healthcare clinic network with construction commencing on the first of six world-class primary healthcare centres to be built across the United Arab Emirates.

Aspen Medical is a global provider of innovative healthcare solutions across a diverse range of clients in the defence, mining, oil and gas, government and humanitarian sectors. The company is a world leader in the delivery of healthcare solutions, particularly those that are remote, challenging or under-resourced.

An official ground-breaking ceremony was held on 11 December at Abu Samrah, United Arab Emirates. Aspen Medical CEO Bruce Armstrong says, “Our company is very pleased to be working in partnership with the Department of Health to bring our global primary healthcare experience to the people of Abu Dhabi through our locally based team”.

Healthcare coverage in the Emirate is generally good but there are still capacity shortfalls in some rural areas. Following a public tender process, the Department of Health Abu Dhabi signed an agreement with Aspen Medical to provide comprehensive primary healthcare in nine rural and under-served areas of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. The new clinics will be designed, built and operated by Aspen Medical.

According to the Undersecretary of the Department of Health Abu Dhabi, His Excellency Mohamed Al Hameli, “The Department of Health is looking forward to working with Aspen Medical to strengthen both the coverage and quality of primary healthcare in Abu Dhabi. Our agreement will establish a primary healthcare model that can be expanded more broadly through the Abu Dhabi healthcare system”.

The Abu Samrah Primary Health Clinic is due for completion in 2020, with further clinics being constructed in Al Wathba, Shakhbout City, Umm Ghaffa, Al Dhahra and Al Salamat. The clinics will provide comprehensive services to the public including general and family medicine, vaccinations and immunisations, diagnostic services and an on-site pharmacy.

Aspen Medical currently operates public clinics in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, and private clinics for companies in the oil and gas sector. Aspen Medical has recently been awarded a 23-year contract to manage and operate two public hospitals in Fiji.
